Inner Connections Parshat Devarim

Imagine if G-d forbid today were your last day and you knew it. Or if you were told you only had a few weeks to live….

Imagine what you would say, how you would say it and to whom.

Imagine what you wouldn’t say.

I know it’s a lot to think about and we often don’t like to think about it. It’s hard to live your life like you could die any moment, any day. But really, that is the reality. One could die at any moment and certainly any die.

So think about it, what would you say? How would you say it?

In this week’s parsha we start a new sefer, a new book. Devarim. What does devarim mean? It means things and it also means words. We create “things” with our “words”.

These are the words (devarim) which Moses spoke to all Israel on that side of the Jordan in the desert, in the plain opposite the Red Sea, between Paran and Tofel and Lavan and Hazeroth and Di Zahav (Devarim 1:1).

These were Moshe’s last words, his last teachings. He knew that he was going to die and he chose his words carefully. What to say, how to say it, when to say it. Why? Because like I said, we create “things” with our “words” and therefore we must be so careful with what we say and how we say it.

May we merit the wisdom to create good things with our words, to say the right thing at the right time and remember that while our stay here in this world is temporary, the words we say create “permanent” things.

With blessings,

Shabbat Shalom,

Elana
