Heartbeats

I keep hearing that there is no connection or that the connection is gone. It was when…it can only be if…the list goes on and on.

She reminisces. There were days when she was enamored. Days when she was in love. Days when she prayed with fervor, days when her commitment was strong.

She cries to me that those days are gone.

How to connect when you feel tired?

It’s not physical because for that I could prescribe a nap. It’s mental, emotional. She feels deceived and disheartened.

What in the world is wrong? Why does she feel so low when before she felt so strong?

How many births have I merited to attend over the years? I don’t know, too numerous to count.

The midwife looks for the heartbeat and do you know what is music to the ears? When you hear the baby’s heartbeat- up and down, up and down. Can you imagine the fear when the sound is silent? When the bell beeps a flat solid tone? Do you know that there is no life except for up and down? Which makes me to conclude that life is never a straight line, it’s up and down. Life is where you are at.

There are moments of passion, moments of inspirational classes and inspirational places. And there are moments when you feel low. Moments when you feel down. Moments when you have to try so hard to look for connection. But don’t you see that in those moments there too is life. In those moments, if you choose it, you can actually soar great heights.

“For this commandment that I command you today-it is not hidden from you and it is not distant. It is not in heaven [for you] to say, “Who can ascend to the heaven for us and take it for us, so that we can listen to it and preform it?” Nor it is across the sea, [for you] to say, “Who can cross to the other side of the sea for us and take it for us, so that we can listen to it and perform it? Rather, the matter is very near to you-in your mouth and your heart-to perform it (Devarim 30:11-14)”

What does this mean? That there are no excuses? That’s right. No excuses, just a choice.

“See-I have placed before you today the life and the good, and the death and the evil, that which I command you today…(ibid 30:15).”

Sometimes the choice is harder and sometimes it is easier, but when you choose to connect; where ever you are in the moment, you make the choice of life. By not choosing to live, you by default choose to die.

May we consciously make the choice of life, to live and to connect. May we hear the heart beat strong, with its up and with its down.

Shabbat Shalom! With blessings for a sweet , good healthy year.

Ketiva v’chatima tova,

Elana
